Shakespeare in the Park and Other Night Time Entertainment

In The Blog by Dr James Wellborn

Look around your town to find opportunities to spend an evening watching a play, movie or concert under the stars.  It is a fun, inexpensive experience for the whole family.  Pack up food and drink, bring blankets and lawn chairs and prepare to spread out on the grass to be entertained outdoors.  (Don’t forget to bring bug repellent for those pesky mosquitoes.)  If not your kids get restless, they can wander around (outside of the viewing area) to find their own entertainment.  You may even consider allowing your kids to bring a friend just in case the show bores them.  This month in my area, the Nashville Shakespeare Festival begins their annual summer Shakespeare in the Park production.  This year the play will be A Midsummer’s Night Dream.   There is preshow entertainment, refreshments and simple food you can purchase (if you don’t want to bring your own) and relaxed, high quality theater.

Outdoor movie nights are quite common as a family oriented activity in many communities.  Over in east Nashville, they have the Grassy Knoll Movie Night.  This month the showing will be on August 18th.  Head on over to their facebook page for information.    There is the Lawn Chair Theater Kid’s Movie Night out in Leiper’s Fork.  Pinkerton Park in Franklin hosts a Movie in the Park once a month throughout the summer.  This is a novel way to be together and be outside at night.
