When you are considering movies for family movie night, you might consider ones in which swimming is an important element. They can be terrorizing (Jaws), campy (Bathing Beauty with Esther Williams) or, like the ones described below, inspirational.
Swimming Upstream (PG-13)
Australian swimmer Tony Fingleton rose above his deeply troubled home life in order to become a national champion in 1950s Brisbane. This is his story in film. A great example of a teenager succeeding and coming into his own through persistence and hard work despite a severely dysfunctional, abusive family.
Touch the Wall (documentary, probably G)
This documentary follows Olympic swimmers Missy Franklin and Kara Lynn Joyce on their road to competing at the 2012 Olympics. They start out as team mates and become competitors and find their way back all mixed with the excitement of competition. This documentary is remarkable and inspirational and touching and motivating and educational and entertaining.
Some other films that revolve around swimming are: On A Clear Day, Alex, The Guardian, Pride, Breaking the Surface: The Greg Louganis Story, Dawn, Victor
