Flea Markets

In The Blog by Dr James Wellborn

Spring and early Summer is the time for garage sales and flea markets. The sun is out but it’s not too hot. Lots of people are looking to clean out the house and sell off unwanted treasures (and trash) after a long winter. Flea markets and garage sales can make for a fun outing for the whole family. There is something for everyone. Flea markets are a huge treasure trove of magical and fascinatingly useless objects to attract the kids. There is no end to needed but heretofore unpurchased additions to the household appliances, tools, furnishings and decorations.

Get up early. Pack everyone in the car (or take a walk down the street) to some promising garage sales. For a more lively adventure, drive over to the local flea market. Upon arrival, pass out a hand full of dollars with some change to the kids. Set them loose to learn about the value of a dollar, practice bartering or discover the shocking disappointment of things not turning out to fulfill all the promise that seemed so certain at the time of purchase. Meanwhile, you can casually wander amid the more practical items (only to end up purchasing the adult version of magical and fascinatingly useless objects). Stop by an inexpensive fast food restaurant on the way home for a treat. And everyone is back home in time to start Saturday chores! Perfect morning.
